1. What is sciatica?

Sciatica is used to describe a pain that goes from the lower back or buttock to the lower leg. It is a type of nervous pain and in many cases, the pressure on the nerves due to the disc which emerges in the lower back. It is most frequently seen in middle-aged adults, and males are susceptible. The term sciatica has its origin from the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in our body. This nerve is responsible for a significant proportion of the stimulation and motion of the legs. Sciatica represents pain in the area infected by the sciatic nerve.

Radicular pain / radiculopathy are medical terms that doctors use when describing the condition. There are many causes of foot pain, and not all foot pain is sciatica. People often explain sciatica as a disease and it is necessary to convince them that it is a symptom of an underlying problem.

2. What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Severity and symptoms vary greatly. In severe cases, the affected person may have difficulty walking or standing upright.

Some of the commonly seen symptoms include

Pain in one or both legs, like burning, stinging, pricking, electric shock or cramps, often to the feet. Pain may be aggravated by agitation, cough and sneezing.

Tingling, tingling, and / or numbness in the feet or legs

Muscle weakness with weight gain or difficulty walking.

Buttock / longbow pain and stiffness.

3. What is the cause of sciatica?

Herniated Disc: The spine is made up of several bones called vertebrae that are arranged one above the other. The disc is made of a hard material on the outside and a soft jelly-like substance on the inside. Disc herniation can occur if there are cracks or cracks in the outer layers, allowing the internal jelly-like material to spread through the crack. This can cause swelling and compression of nerve roots in the spine. Slipped disk is a commonly used term for this condition. There is an increased susceptibility to herniated discs as we age as the soft, jelly-like substance dries and shrinks over time, making the disc more fragile.

Spinal stenosis: Stenosis means narrowing. The narrow spine may be in the central canal or in the pathways / tunnels through which the nerve exits the spine. In addition to disc problems, spinal joint pain or ligaments may also cause / contribute to narrowing.

Spondylolisthesis: In this situation there is a problem with the alignment of the vertebrae, where a vertebra is more forward or backward, which can narrow the spaces for nerves and result in sciatica.

Piriformis syndrome: In this condition, the piriformis muscle of the pelvis is responsible for the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Stroke / fracture

Spinal tumors and infections are rare causes of sciatica.

4. Can it resolve itself?

Fortunately, most cases of sciatica resolve from weeks to months with conservative treatment. The input and treatment of experts can help. Pain relievers, hot or cold compresses, altered activity levels, and physical therapy may be suggested depending on your condition. An injection of steroids into the epidural space within the spine can relieve short-term pain in the sciatica. Persistent pain can cause nerve changes (known as plasticity). This can be a source of constant pain even if the original triggering event has been resolved … hence the importance of handling them as soon as possible.

After looking at many cases over the years, I would say that it is not easy to predict the course. This can be solved, but the extent to which it depends on many factors: some are variable and some are not. The recovery period varies from one person to another.

5. What are the warning signs?

Some symptoms point to a serious problem and require immediate therapy. Ignoring them can cause permanent nerve damage. Some of these include

Decreased urinary control / inability to urinate

Loss of control on feces.

Numbness around the bottom

Leg weakness / loss of control

6. What can I do to reduce my risk of sciatica?

Although it is not possible to completely eliminate the risk of sciatica, adopting a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk. This includes stop smoking.
